The efergy elite electricity monitor is simple to install and use. The sensor wirelessly sends information about the amount of electricity you are using to the display monitor. The monitor converts this into kilowatt-hours, the standard unit which the electricity company uses to charge you. This shows how much you are using in the same units that are on your bill. Input the amount your energy company charges you for each kilowatt-hour and you can see how much you are spending in electricity instantly. Make instant changes to save money, energy and the environment.

Basic system, not so good if you have solar Review by Dan

For most homeowners this is an incredibly useful system for measuring electricity use, especially for appliances that you can't test with a simple plug-in meter like a Kill-a-watt (either because they're hard-wired or because they use 240 V). I used it to quickly track down "phantom" appliances that draw power even when they're turned off, including hard-wired smoke detectors.

Just two caveats:

(1) Installation can be tricky and is not for the faint of heart. In my case there wasn't enough space around one of the feed wires in the panel, so I had to turn the power off and then pull and bend the stiff wires until the sensor finally fit (barely).

(2) If you have a grid-connected solar PV system you should get the True Power Meter instead of the Elite Classic, because your inverters may confuse the Classic to think they're drawing power when they're not (e.g., at night). This is because inverters have a nontrivial "power factor". (Also, of course, the Elite won't tell you the direction in which the power is going between your home and the grid. I don't know whether the True Power Meter can do that.) (Posted on September 4, 2015)
