Works with everything I've tried so far, including LightwaveRF various cheap power sockets and various TV remotes.
I am delighted with this broadlink . I had wanted to bridge wifi with IR to control a security gate remotely, ideally with iphone app. Did the trick, pretty easy to setup up and iOS app was fine. It had the timer feature which works perfectly, so the gate can be automatically controlled for the times I set. To get it working when not on local wifi required me to update the firmware, which after some digging around I found the update link. Just ordered another one to have a crack at consolidating a load of remotes.
This is a very handy device that any home cinema enthusiast should invest in. Like me, you've probably tried all of the various media remotes that are supposed to do everything for you, however, they end up being so complicated and have far too many buttons you just don't use them, instead reaching for the original remote instead. With this little device that problem ends and you can use your mobile as your remote.
You can add any remote with this, IR (infra-red, commonly found in most media devices) or RF (Radio Frequency, used for devices that might be obscured or hidden, like Fans, Projector screens or Air Con units). The importance of this is apparent when you own devices like z-wave, or media projectors, or remote control heaters that use RF instead of IR and you want a single remote to do it all.
How does it work? You simply plug this in, located in a place that is central or easily able to see your devices. The triangular shape is not just a visual design, it has infrared transmitters at each side which all transmit at once to ensure your devices, no matter where they are in the room, get the command. You install the APP on your iphone or android phone and it will find the device without fuss. I don't recall having to do anything here other than connect to my wifi. At this point you can select any type of device or remote, or create a custom remote. Custom remotes are where the action is, you can put all of your common remote presses on one screen and even customise them with images of your own choice. You can also program a sequence of presses like a macro that will send the commands in sequence so you can turn on your lights, your amp, your TV, change to a specific channel etc. You could activate your electric projector screen, turn on the projector, turn on the amp and dim the lighting whilst closing the curtains. All these things at the single press of a button.
I am not looking for the macro solution but it is nice that it exists, especially since this is a one way communication so if one device doesn't get the message then it will be painful. However, I assume if you choose a good placement this thing will work just as well as your standard remotes, probably better because of the number of infrared transmitters on this.
Downsides are that it is a chinese product, although it looks great the menu system has some bad grammar and the interface has the odd bug here and there. But once you've programmed your remotes in it works perfectly. I am very pleased with this device and it is a great boost for my system and the price is unbeatable. A similar device is on kickstarter now at a much higher price and it does less than this device (No RF).
Other mentionable benefits are that this device communicates via wifi, which basically means that as long as you have an internet connection on your phone you can use it - even if you are the other side of the world. Turn on the air con on your way home, turn on the lights or the heating (if you have a portable heater). Another great benefit is if you have these remote control plug in devices for your lights or if you have electronic curtains, you can program timed sequences so it will turn on the lights to keep burglars at bay. This is quite powerful stuff all packed in a tiny little box with a user interface that a child could use. The instructions are a bit difficult but there are guides out there on the web to help. I also believe the SDK is now available for those who want to get a little more techy with it.
So overall PRO's
